Maverik

Adventure in Environmental Graphics

CHALLENGE

Following renovations at its Salt Lake City headquarters, convenience store and gas station chain Maverik wanted their third- and fourth-floor interiors to reflect the brand’s spirit of outdoor adventure and bring their tagline—“Adventure’s First Stop”—to life.

In Des Moines, Iowa, following Maverik’s acquisition of convenience brand Kum & Go. Maverik sought a similar transformation, one that would connect to the design of headquarters while reflecting the unique character of the Midwest and honoring the heritage of Kum & Go for its legacy employees.

All of the updates, of course, would need to happen in occupied spaces, around standard business hours, with no disruption to operations.

STRATEGY & CREATIVE

Establishing the Creative Foundation

For Maverik’s Salt Lake City headquarters, Phase 3 designed an environmental graphics program depicting the topography and landscapes of the American west and the outdoor adventures they inspire. A rich-toned relief map of the Missisippi and Wisconsin rivers, from La Crosse to Dubuque, adorns one common area, while nearby rooms feature mountain-bike and canoe-themed installations. Instead of white walls, real-wood paddles and rubber tires have been  reimagined and repeated as patterned motifs, converting conference rooms into conversation pieces that invite curiosity and inspire brand pride.

Bringing the Brand to Des Moines

Adapting the visual language established in Salt Lake City , the Des Moines office became Maverik “Base Camp”, with custom landscape and nature photography that celebrates the spirit of climbing and the feeling of ascent.

Thoughtfully acknowledging the office’s history, a tribute wall with raised cut-out letters acknowledges the legacy of Kum & Go and the shared purpose that unites the two brands becoming one: going all out to keep customers on the go.

Making Adventure Tangible

Throughout both locations, Phase 3 combined large-scale printed graphics, raised-letter signage and detailed custom fabrication to create dimension and intrigue. The unexpected materials inspired by outdoor recreation—like bike tires, paddleboards and skateboard wheels—added texture, depth and a playful sense of discovery.

Approximately 40 unique pieces were created across the offices, including murals, dimensional type, custom sculptures and stratified maps. From concepting and design to production and installation, the project is a testament to Phase 3’s expertise and attention to detail and Maverik’s commitment to making their adventurous brand tangible for employees every day.
